Ayataka Tanemura directed and Pierrot produced the Japanese animated feature Black Clover Movie: Sword of the Wizard King(Burakku Kurōbā: Mahōtei no Ken). The film, based on Yuki Tabata’s Black Clover manga series, was released in Japanese theaters on June 16, 2023, by Shochiku. That same day, it was made available for international streaming on Netflix.

Asta, a boy born with no magic in a world where magic is everything, and his rival Yuno, a genius mage chosen by the legendary 4-leaf Grimoire, have together fought a number of powerful enemies to prove their power beyond adversity and aim for the top mage “Wizard King”.

Standing in front of Asta and Yuno, who dream of becoming the Wizard King, are the Wizard Kings from the past. Conrad Leto, Julius Novachrono’s predecessor Wizard King, once respected by the people of Clover Kingdom but suddenly rebelled against the kingdom and was sealed away, has been resurrected.

Now he aims to use the “Imperial Sword” to resurrect the 3 most feared Wizard Kings in history, Edward Avalaché, Princia Funnybunny and Jester Garandaros, and take over the Clover Kingdom.

The film was released on Netflix on June 16th. From June 16th to June 18th, the film received 6.4 million views and was the second most watched Non-English movie. While previous episodes of the anime featured Asta’s quest to become Wizard King, this film begins with a battle tournament. However, it is abruptly interrupted by a former Wizard King who has turned evil, Conrad Leto.

Conrad also wields the Imperial Sword, also known as Elsdocia, one of the most formidable weapons in the Clover Kingdom. He is supported by three past Wizard Kings, Edward Avalaché, Princia Funnybunny, and Jester Garandaros. All of THEM share the same vision of abolishing the Clover Kingdom.

Asta and the other magical knights present rush into action, willing to battle to the death to protect the residents of Clover Kingdom. Asta is also tasked with fighting Conrad and preventing him from taking over Clover Kingdom. While the other Magic Knights divide and fight each wicked Wizard King in groups.

Although Conrad is a former Witch King, he is not ruthless and will do anything to get his way. He also tries to convince Asta to join his side and fight with him. But Asta is too stubborn and believes that the Witch King should be protected. This belief makes him even more angry and he tries with all his might, hoping to stop Conrad and his evil revenge.

The film does a great job of capturing the essence of Black Clover, deftly capturing the defining characteristics of the series. It basically focuses on Asta’s journey and growth as he faces enormous challenges that test his endurance and how far he is willing to go to become the Wizard King.

However, Asta is not alone in his battles and is supported by his friends who dive deep into battle against powerful former sorcerer-kings.

Character Animation

Studio Pierrot has gone above and beyond to ensure that the audience gets a spectacular excursion inside the world of Black Clover. From the numerous pawns spawned by Princia Funnybunny to the angel-like ice golems created by Edward Avalaché.

The fight scenes are equally captivating and dramatic, with brilliant colors and captivating action scenes. The 2D and CGI elements work nicely together to create an animation that is both visually spectacular. It keeps spectators on the edge of their seats as our heroes engage in combat.

Each character is given the ideal amount of attention and screen time because of Studio Pierrot’s attention to detail and consistency in their character illustrations. As the Magic Knights unleash their full arsenal of skills, fan favorites including Yami Sukehiro, Mereoleona Vermillion, and Noelle Silva make appearances and participate in combat scenes.
