The likeability of an anime is often decided by a handful of well-drawn and enticing characters. We even find that many times, anime are named after their protagonists. It stands to reason that the appeal of such an anime would heavily depend on how well the protagonist is done.
Although we expect the protagonist to be the main guy in the show, we find that many anime are carried by characters who aren’t even in the main cast. Nothing captivates a viewer as well as unique anime character designs do.
Character design in the visual arts refers to the whole development of a character’s aesthetic, personality, conduct, and overall visual look.
In this article, we will give a list of 6 Unique anime character designs from anime released in 2022. We will aim to fill this list with characters we believe will be stuck in the minds of anime viewers for a long time. Not only because of the quality of the story they took part in but because of the impact these characters themselves made.
Our list includes:
Gyutaro from Demon Slayer Season 2
Tengen Uzui from Demon Slayer Season 2
Yor Forger from Spy x Family
Jolyne Cujoh from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure (Stone Ocean)
Bisco Akaboshi from Sabuiki Bisco
Pochita from Chainsaw Man
Unique Character Designs
He is the primary antagonist of Season 2 of Demon Slayer and one of the most unique anime character designs we have seen in a while. In this story, Gyutaro was a human youngster who worked as a debt collector in Yoshiwara’s Rashomon Riverbank, the lowest class in the Entertainment District, before Doma, who was Upper-Rank Six at the time, personally transformed him and Daki into demons.
Gyutaro was a tall, well-muscled man with a significant amount of greyish-black spots on his skin. His unusual anatomy made his upper body, arms, and legs very muscular, but his waist was abnormally thin, and his pelvis protruded out at an awkward angle (this appearance, paired with his weapons made him look like a praying mantis).
The kanji for “Upper Rank” and “Six” were inscribed across his thin, green and red eyes, which had an orange sclera and were sharply inclined downward at the sides. Around the crown of his head, his unkempt black hair abruptly ends and turns a brighter green color.
Black dots and a flowing water-like pattern can be seen on both his face and body, which are marked with what appears to be ink. Gyutaro is said to have a highly disagreeable appearance.
He was dressed in a pair of baggy blue slacks, no shirt, and seven pieces of red-patterned material, three of which were wrapped around each arm and one of which was placed around the neck.
Gyutaro Character traits
Gyutaro eventually came to the conclusion that it was acceptable to take from people who were living better lives than he was due to the trials he had to endure as a human. He has a tendency to hurt himself when he’s furious, upset, or jealous, as evidenced by the time he became envious of Tengen and scratched himself so hard that he tore deep wounds into his own flesh. The fact that he never once showed any signs of discomfort from his self-inflicted wounds suggested that he had a high pain tolerance.
After fighting numerous Demon Slayers and Hashira for more than a century, Gyutaro has grown conceited and arrogant in battle. He has developed the habit of underestimating his opponents and considering them inferior to him, as he did with the group of Demon Slayers sent to kill him by having his sister deal with them first rather than himself.
As weapons, Gyutaro carries around a pair of Kama fashioned from his own flesh and blood.
Tengen is a very tall, broad-shouldered, and muscular man with white hair. He is one of the Demon Slayer corps Hashiras, the Hashira of sound. He led the mission to the entertainment district in season 2. Tengen makes our list of the most unique anime character designs because of how flamboyant his design is.
His hair is of an uneven length, the longest strands coming to his shoulders, and is styled with three more strikings, shorter clumps curving up to drop as bangs between his eyes and on either side of his face. He has very lean, maroon eyes that show up to incline inwards, each with one long eyelash streaming to the distant side of his face.
He is exceptionally alluring as noted by numerous ladies and indeed by Zenitsu. This has driven him to utilize his looks as an apparatus for his missions at whatever point influence is fundamental.
Tengen is an unpredictable and garish person, continuously needing to be “flashy”, and having a desire for everything to be garish and extraordinary. Be that as it may, Tengen too incorporates a caring side that’s concealed beneath his colorful façade, especially to those that are greatly near to him, most outstandingly his three spouses, Makio, Suma, and Hinatsuru.
As his fundamental weapon, he uses two immense Nichirin cleavers that are golden in color, which each have a score within the sharp closes of their edges and are held together at the handle by a metal chain, making it exceptionally reminiscent of nunchucks.
She appears in the Spy x Family series as the wife of Lord Forger and the adoptive mother of Anya Forger. She works during the day as a tailor in the city centre but secretly, she is an assassin.
Yor is an appealing and decently tall youthful lady with fair skin, long dark hair, and upturned red eyes. She parts her hair into two parts and crosses it over her head, securing it with a headband. At home, Yor for the most part wears a revealing ruddy off-shoulder sweater with dark tights, a ruddy skirt, and brown-heeled lower-leg boots.
She wears a white headband and a combination of dangling gold studs in the shape of little spikes. When going outside, she wears a long beige coat with dark buttons over her dress.
As a professional killer, Yor wears a form-fitting halter-style dark dress that appears off her shoulders and cleavage, with a rose choker and a red rose design on the interior of her skirt. The front of the skirt is mid-thigh length, whereas the back comes underneath her knees.
She moreover wears a match of dark thigh-high boots and dark fingerless gloves. The headband she wears is gold-colored with a rose and two spikes on each side. Her weapons (a pair of reasonably long needles) are gold as well. She joins our list of the most unique anime character designs because of how different she looks and behaves in her two different personas.
Yor interacts little with her coworkers and is perceived as being somewhat aloof. Camilla has called Yor a robot because of her shyness and introversion. Yor is similarly extraordinarily cool-headed and able to maintain her composure while engaged in a fight.
She is incredibly polite to the point of asking her assassination targets if she may take their lives. After becoming a family with Loid and Anya, Yor becomes more expressive and opens up to her coworkers, asking for help on being a better wife or cooking.
She is fiercely devoted to her fictitious family, especially Anya, whom she defends with no qualms.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure series’ last main character is Jolyne Cujoh. Jotaro Kujo’s daughter, Jolyne, is the only female JoJo to date. Jotaro leaving the family after her mother’s divorce made Jolyne extra angrier.
She quickly became a member of the Hell Riders gang and spent more time getting into mischief. She left the gang at age 19, straightened up, and went on a date with Romeo. Romeo struck a pedestrian fatally as he was driving home, causing a collision.
Romeo decides to take the corpse and dump it somewhere, persuading Jolyne to help him and forget about the whole incident. Romeo was concerned that he would be charged with reckless driving and removed from a university’s waiting list. A few days later, however, Jolyne was found at home and arrested.
Her lipstick and partially green-dyed hair, which contrasts wonderfully with her naturally black hair, show that her sense of style extends beyond her attire. This style is so rare to find in other characters and she can be recognized easily in a crowd. She is definitely one of the most unique anime character designs in 2022.
Outfit-wise Jolyne typically sports a crop top and pants set that features a larger spider web pattern. The crop top in particular has cuts toward its bottom to make it look more web-like in design. Additionally, the outfit has a nice dark-blue and white color scheme that goes well together. Overall, the design is very chic, with a great gothic meets delinquent vibe that fits Stone Ocean perfectly.
Stone Free, Jolyne’s stand. Gives her the ability to unravel pieces of her body into a string. This makes it a very flexible Stand, allowing her to listen in on conversations as well as run away and conceal herself by tying various parts of herself together into a string.
One of the two main characters in the Sabikui Bisco series is Bisco Akaboshi. The Japanese government has placed a premium on the head of Bisco, a mushroom keeper, for mushroom terrorism.
Bisco stands out for his spiky red hair, emerald eyes, and the cracked goggles he wears all the time. Additionally, he is characterized as having big canines and a crimson tattoo under his right eye. On his travels, he dons practical survival gear and a white robe that protects him from the Rust Wind.
As for his personality, he is usually seen trying to convince people to cultivate mushrooms. But when they refuse, he ends up getting violent with them. He usually avoids human interaction and he is generally not very smart.
His essential weapon, common to all Mushroom keepers, is a bow with bolts coated in extraordinary spores. It causes an assortment of monster mushrooms to immediately develop wherever the sharpened stones puncture. Even though we have seen survival-style attire done before, this particular blend of styles makes him one of the most unique anime character designs.
In the Chainsaw Man story, Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil, a being that personifies chainsaw dread and served as the Chainsaw Man until Denji showed up.
Pochita is primarily depicted as a little orange demon with canine-like characteristics, a handle on his shoulder blade, a cord for a tail, and a chainsaw sticking out of his skull for the majority of the story.
Chainsaw Man just came out and you can read about where to watch it in this article.
Honorable Unique Anime Character Designs
Besides the unique anime characters of 2022 listed above, we equally have a compilation of great character designs from series like Vinland Saga, Black Clover, One Piece and more.
Zora Ideale from Black Clover
There’s no doubt that Zora’s edgy hero/villain hybrid appearance captured my interest right away. my mind started to theorize wildly as a result.
He certainly appears dangerous with his spiky red hair, sly eyes, and shark-like jaws.
His clothing choices also give him the appearance of a skilled assassin.
And when the character himself is taken into account, this design is a good fit. Despite his intimidating appearance.
Ryuuko Matoi from Kill La Kill
She contrasts her… “battle-ready” mode so starkly because in her “base form” she appears to be such a renegade, someone who would unquestionably be one of the boys.
She wears Senketsu and is as scant as television will let her be. Making this warrior wear iron armor only on her shoulders and hands was Studio Trigger’s most bizarre middle finger to censorship.
It seems like the exposed middle portion is not a design defect. You can choose between body positivity and market awareness.
Sinbad from Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic
Sincerely, Most Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic characters are unique. If you need to list all of them you will end up with an article of more than 10000 words. They look very stunning in their entire Indian/Arab style of clothing.
And when it comes to it, Sinbad simply wins.
This tall, strong Chad-like man is decked up with jewels of all different colors, shapes, and sizes, which really makes him stand out. At first glimpse, it was obvious that he was the big man. Bonus marks for how he was portrayed in the prequel, in my opinion. It is clear how much power these jewels have, both aesthetically and in terms of narrative.
Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Kamina doesn’t strike you as the quiet, reserved sort with just one glance. He is as showy as they come, with bright colors and strong angles dominating every aspect of his design.
Even only the ridiculously pointed glasses might represent Kamina’s personality: loud, direct, observable, and most importantly, remembered.
He wasn’t intended to be the strongest man living. But more like the show’s spokesperson, like the brilliant symbol of hope that everyone looked to. So there he was.
The regulations state that he receives an additional ten points for possessing a katana. Who is also calculating the points for this list?
Tomura Shigaraki from Boku no Hero Academia
Shigaraki’s design features severed hands all over his head and torso, which is one characteristic that is particularly unusual and is immediately apparent to a detective.
At first, you may assume it was merely a gimmick to make him appear more threatening. But as we subsequently discovered from the manga, they actually play a big role in the story.
